Bill’s Story

Being 84 years old hasn’t meant retired Airforce man Bill, has stopped enjoying keeping handy. While his age has meant he’s had to slow down a little, Bill is still both very capable and very keen to help his neighbours on projects, tinker in his workshop and even get out for the occasional round of golf.

But Bill’s double diagnosis of cancer in his right eye and cancer in his lung last year, did mean he was suddenly forced to lean on others for help. With his wife needing care of her own, Bill’s requirement of attending daily radiotherapy appointments for six weeks put a big strain on him at a time he was most in need.

Bill’s radiotherapy had to start immediately following his diagnosis, so CanCare were able to step in and provide the resources for him to have transport both to and from his daily appointments. Being able to rely on this throughout his treatment meant a huge burden was lifted from Bill’s responsibilities and he was able to focus on his intensive treatment.

Having just got a big thumbs up from his consultant that his cancers have responded brilliantly to treatment, Bill says that CanCare were “simply terrific.” Demonstrating just how friendly they are, Bill was both surprised and delighted that the volunteer’s all remembered him when he went back to Hurstville Hospital for a checkup recently, six months after his treatment ended.

“It wasn’t just the transport. Everyone was so keen to help with the simple things from lovely tea and biscuits to even helping me down the steps,” Bill said when we spoke. “I can’t recommend CanCare more.”
